 REMOTE BORDER CROSSING PERMITS I just wanted to let you know that Nora and I have now completed the necessary requirements to get an I-68 (US) and a Remote Area Border Crossing ( Canadian). The easy one first. Canada has not changed the Remote Area Border Crossing program. To register for one please contact Bryan at Canadian Immigration. His phone number is 1-807-852-3968. He is located in Rainy River. The plan is good for one full year after your next birthday. So for example if your birthday is June 15th, and you applied in May it would be good until June 15, 2004. You should be able to complete the registration by fax, and they will mail you hard copy of your certificate. The cost for a family is 30.00 Canadian. You can pay this by credit card over the phone. Now for the I-68. (US) You must call and make an appointment with US immigration. Their number in Winnipeg is 783-2340. The registration time takes approx 30 minutes. Nora and I were the first they had done, so it took about 45 minutes. All family members crossing are required to apply for the I-68 in person. The captain can no longer register his/her family. All children over the age of 14 must also carry there own registration. You will require a passport or birth certificate to confirm your nationality. We had this done at the airport. When you arrive you go the US Immigration area, approx the center of the counter area at the airport. There is a phone there marked immigration and you call them to let them know you are there. They will come and get you and sign you in. They will then take you to a small room for processing. Once there they will log you into their computer system. You will then have your right index finger scanned and your print will be logged into the computer. You will then have a digital picture taken and that will be logged as well. They will then print a hard copy of your certificate. They imprint it with their seal and laminate it. You are required to have it in your possession whenever crossing the border and be able to produce it should you be checked by immigration. The fee for this is still 32.00 US dollars for a family or 16.00 US dollars for a single person. Please try and take exact change with you. You must pay in cash only.
