 NAVIGATION AID CHANGES – LAKE OF THE WOODS DISTRICT The following is a listing of a number of changes planned for the Lake of the Woods and Winnipeg River by the Canadian Coast Guard, some of which were implemented at the end of the 2001 navigation season, and others that will be completed starting as soon as the ice is out in the spring of 2002. This list has been produced by the LAKE OF THE WOODS DISTRICT PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION INC., from information received from the Canadian Coast Guard. The list has been prepared in an attempt to help boaters bridge the anticipated gap between the implementation of many of the changes, and the availability of the new set of Navigation Charts of the area. While every attempt has been made to confirm the accuracy of this list, the Association takes no responsibility for any error or omission. Boaters should use this list as a general reference only, and always refer to their Navigation Charts for the exact location of reefs and water depths. Boaters should further note that some of the Aids appear on more than one chart. The various charts over lap each other, to some degree, and while the changes have been broken down by chart number, no effort has been made to list the changes more than once, when they appear on more than one chart. Also, boaters should be aware that a LARGE NUMBER of the existing Buoys will be re-numbered as part of the modernization process. Don’t be surprised if you find the Buoy number different from that on your chart, if you are using one of the old charts. For most of the additions, the locations of the Aids are shown in Longitude and Latitude as provided by the Canadian Coast Guard. Boaters should note that ALL of the Ring Buoys are being removed or replaced with a different type of Buoy. The area will see the implementation of five new styles of Buoy. They are: 1 – North Cardinal Buoy 2 – South Cardinal Buoy 3 – West Cardinal Buoy 4 – East Cardinal Buoy 5 – Isolated Danger Buoy BE CAREFUL and learn what each means BEFORE you venture out in your boat and run into trouble. The Canadian Coast Guard will be meeting with representatives of the Lake of the Woods District Property Owners Association at the end of the 2002 boating season to review the changes made and consider adjustments that may be required.
